Question for those who were around for both Senators teams

I know that in 1958 the NY papers covered the Dodgers and Giants in
spring training. A radio station carried re-creations of Giants games
during the season ans a tv station did a few Dodger games.
Did anything similar happen either time in D.C.

Sorry, I meant to post this in the DC group.
What I wanted to know here is what, if any, coverage the Montreal
media is giving to the team.

Don't count on it. With 17,000 season tickets sold it is highly unlikely.
Demographics are much different with population explosions in Montgomery
County, MD and Fairfax County, VA....this team is going to go nowhere unless
the league pulls an "NHL" and then all of MLB will come crashing down.

Look at Tampa Bay's attendance figures.

17K this year means *nothing* if the new owners (whenever they buy the
team) don't hire good people.

Montreal was drawing 35K on a Wednesday night before the '94 strike.

Sell all your players or let them walk for nothing, not even a draft
pick in return, deliberately torpedo a stadium deal, lie constantly
and see how many people show up for a game.

Facts are curious things.... in 1994 when the strike/lockout occurred,
Montreal was averaging 24,543 a night - which was 11th out of 14 NL
Teams. Was that 35K on opening night?

Care to run through retrosheet.org to find that 35K Wednesday night?

It's still much higher than the <4000 the Expos were pulling the last few
seasons...

But not the 35K on a Wednesday night as stated by a previous poster -
as an example of the support the Expos had.

Sorry - I know it's late, but I was slightly off.

Attendance had been steadily rising at Stade Olympique all year. The
average numbers are significantly below what the Expos were drawing
towards the end.

Mon, 8/1/94 vs Cardinals - 30,359
Tue, 8/2/94 vs Cardinals - 37,553
Wed, 8/3/94 vs Cardinals - 30,541
Thu, 8/4/94 vs Cardinals - 39,044

Ok, so technically, my 35K on a Wednesday wan't right. It was 37K on
a Tuesday or 39K on a Thursday.

Well done bit of research there. My apologies for challenging the
numbers, but people just post so much crap, I have to ask for facts
sometimes.

Everyone got screwed in 1994.

Interesting note that this thread gets revived now as the Nationals
will pass the 1Million mark in attendance this Saturday, June 11.

I know the feeling. But I'll never forget the feeling of being at
Stade with 30,000 friends and having the place *rock*. When the game
was over (was a weekend game just before the strike and I was visiting
Montreal on my annual trip) it was like a huge party atmosphere in the
plaza outside the stadium..

See how NO ownership was better than the ownership they used to have!

I was at the Friday night double-header against the Pirates when Rusty
Staub returned. If memory serves, there were 58,000 at the Big Owe.
Now that place rocked!

There are legions of baseball fanatics that move here and are
frustrated because of no baseball. I live in NoVa and am glad the
Loudon county thing died. It would have been easier for me but not
for a lot of others in the area.

Even though I don't like going into DC, for baseball, you betcha!!!

I commuted from Woodbridge to Sterling, with one of my routes being to
travel up the Route 28 corridor. I cringed at the thought of how bad traffic
would become there if that thing was built (would have been build on the
east side of the road, between Frying Pan Road and the Dulles Toll Road.

I wish the plan had put it right across 95 from Pentagon. There was a
big piece of commercial property and well within several metro stops.
It was a great location and would have been much better then going
into rough area of DC.

But, I do love baseball and to DC I will go.
