For those old timers here who are still interested, it seems that the
support in DC for the Nationals is so utterly pathetic that they are
now behind DC United in terms of viewership in the area.

Good move, Bud and Jeff. Glad to see it paid off for you. You guys
managed to put baseball behind soccer in the nation's capital!

D.C. United Reigns Supreme On Local Television
July 7, 2008

Chances are, if you are watching sports in Washington D.C. when the
Washington Redskins, Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals aren’t
playing, and you’re looking to pass the time until McGlaughlin Group
comes on, you are watching D.C. United. Courtesy of the venerable D.C.
Sports Bog:

As mentioned earlier today, based on SportsBusiness Journal’s analysis
of Nielsen Media Research numbers, the Nats are drawing an average
rating of 0.39 in the Washington Designated Market Area, which
consists of approximately 2.3 million households. A 0.39 rating
corresponds to about 9,000 households.

For one comparison–with a sport whose season begins and ends at
virtually the same time–D.C. United is thus far drawing a 0.5 rating
for its eight regular-season MLS games that have been shown live on
Comcast SportsNet. That doesn’t count the taped replays CSN shows, nor
does it account for D.C. United games on any of the ESPN/ABC family of
stations. The 0.5 rating corresponds to approximately 11,500 local
households.

Which means that, at the season’s midway point for both franchises,
D.C. United is outdrawing the Nats on TV.

Tell me the Nats don’t need Barry Bonds. I dare you, dawg.

That's a little rough, as their TV deal is apparently pretty screwed up.
They do have fans in the seats.
Just think if the Expos would have had a great TV deal. Labatts Stadium
gets built and Vlad and Grady Sizemore and who knows else packs the place as
they dominate the NL East....... And, with the US$ tanking, players line up
to get a chance to get paid in Loonies........
And, no one needs Bonds, ever. I'd rather endure the continued pain of
WMP, PLoD, FLop, Harris......... anybody in LF but Bonds.

And ours wasn't? They at least *have* a frelling TV deal.

They're currently 12th in the NL in attendance, just a hair in front
of the Padres.

That would have required foresight, something Loria doesn't have.

BTW, the Fishies are dead last in all of baseball in attendance with
no one else even remotely close. It does seem that the most reliable
indicator of bad attendance is having Jeffrey Loria as an owner.

They do get $25 million guaranteed, but apparently they get shuffled
around several cable channels, with little or no advertising, hence the low
viewer numbers. Angelos is doing that on purpose.

Yep, premium pricing for a gruesome AAAA team still gets 29,000 fans, but
the villagers are growing impatient.

I wish that was hurting him, but probably not. If they get a new stadium
and still draw 7 or 8000 people a night, then that will be funny.
